to Isom Enlow, by whom she had a large family of children. An old sketch
of her says that she was the morther of thirteen. We have the names of

!Two Centuries in Elizabethown and Hardin Co., Ky. 1776-1976 by Daniel
E. McClure, Jr., pp. 175, 177 - "Mary Brooks, wife of John LaRue, Isom
Enlow and Thomas Rathbone in that order, is said to have been a woman
of great beauty and of rare intellect. She is said to have studied
medicine and from her pioneer home carried on considerable practice,
and was doubtless welcomed by the settlers' families. Her second
husband, Mr. Enlow, objected to her activities as such, feeling that such
was not in a 'woman's sphere.' His objections, however, according to
well-supposrted local legend, did not prevent her from responding to
Thomas Lincoln's call for help on the morning of Feb. 12, 1809, on which
date Abraham Lincoln entered this world. Her dau., Margaret (Peggy)
Walters and her niece, Rebecca Hodgen Keith, (Mrs. Jacob Keith),
likewise, were visitors in the Lincoln cabin on that wintry day...Mary
Brooks Rathbone was known over a wide section as 'Grandma Rathbone'
and was also known as a skilled midwife. She died i April, 1843. Her
will, probated on May 1, 1843, was one of the first probated in the new
county."
