[1351] Ref: WRIGHT Family in Mifflin County Pennsylvania
[1352] Dear Joe,
[1353]
I received your letter of 25 April this evening. It was like a gift from the
heavens in that the material that you sent has helped me immeasurably. I am
afraid that I have little to add to your store of Wright information, some
speculations perhaps.
[1354]
First, I have been "stuck" for some time with my WRIGHT family. Although, it
wasn't the main focus of my research, I wasn't getting anywhere when I did
pick at it. About two years ago I wrote the following letter to Noah
Zimmerman, a researcher in Mifflintown:
[1355] *** Letter to Noah Zimmerman ***
[1356]
Noah L. Zimmerman
Box 602, Route 1
Richfield, PA 17086-9709
[1357]
Thank you for your post card of Feb. 17 and for your efforts on my behalf to
find the lineage of Rachel Wright. I was really pleased to hear from you. I
have continued to do some research (via microfilm) without much success.
[1358]
My most useful source so far is the Will of Martha Wright which was written
in Perryville, Juniata County, 28 March, 1864. She is the sister of Rachel
and makes mention of the following:
[1359]
David Wright (brother, deceased)
James Wright (brother)
Samuel Wright (brother, deceased)
Therefore there was a family of at least 5 siblings which I speculate to be:
[1360]
David b. 1789
James b. 1796
Samuel b. abt 1798
Martha b. abt 1810
Rachel b 1816
[1361]
David is listed in the Mifflin County 1830 census, Formanag township. There
is evidence (from the census) that Rachel (age 14) was living with her brother
David and his wife at the time, which suggests that her parents were dead by
1830.
[1362]
Other information: David Wright may have married Elizabeth McCoy, b. 1810.
They had children: Nancy b 1838 and William b 1842. (Source 1850 Census,
Juniata County). This would appear to be the David Wright you found in
Presbyterian Cemetery.
[1363]
James Wright married Mary ______, b 1806. They had children: George b.
1834; Nancy, b. 1835; Sarah, b 1838; Nelson, b. 1842, Samuel, b. 1854; and
Albert b. 1848. (Source 1850 Census, Juniata County). I note that Rachel
Wright's husband was named Nelson (Loughry) and that their 2nd son's name was
Albert. Seems to be a lot of name linkage here.
[1364]
Samuel Wright had at least one child, Rachel Jane. (Source, will of Martha
Wright).
[1365]
This doesn't add much information on who the parents were. Clues may be
found in the earlier Mifflin county census indices where I found:
[1366]
1820: Jacob Wright Formanag
John Wright Formanag
John Wright Milford
[1367]
1810: Azup Wright Formanag
Jacob Wright Formanag
John Wright Formanag
According to the wills, Jacob is John's father. I don't have the actual
census counts yet which would help to establish the ages of these families.
[1368]
The Biographical Encyclopedia of Huntington, Mifflin, Juniata, and Perry
Counties list several Wrights none of whom seem to have a firm linkage to
Rachel's family. The ones I have looked at are:
[1369]
Alfred Wright, page 1327
Joseph A. Wright, page 1329
Levi Wright, page 139
George Wright, page 794 (under Hower)
[1370] ** End of letter to Noah Zimmerman ***
[1371]
I scanned the Will index that you thoughtfully included in your letter, and I
immediately found Rachel (and her siblings) listed as the children in the will
of Azzur Wright (no. 388). How I missed that in my own search of the will
indices, I don't know. This gave the name of the father and the surviving
wife. Grizzelda Wright, it turns out, is not the mother but the third wife of
Azzur. From the IGI I discovered who the three wives were:
[1372]
Nancy Armstrong m. 1788
Sally Cole m. 1810
Grizzelda McCormick m 1818
[1373]
Therefore, Sarah (Sally) Cole is the mother of my Rachel. Further, I learned
that Annah Wright is the grandmother who may have been married earlier since
she has a son of a different name in the will. From the names of the
grandchildren, I suspect that grandfather Wright was named David, but that is
largely speculation (to be proven or disproved later).
[1374]
Now, I am unable at the moment to tie in Rachel and her kin with your John
Wright, father of Jane. They must be related somehow, being in the same town
Formanag. But I will keep my eyes open.
[1375]
One interesting lead (or coincidence). In the will abstract for Annah Wright
(345) is listed Edward and Mary Howard, no relationship given. An Edward and
Mary Howard are the maternal grandparents of Rachel's husband, Nelson Loughry
who lived 200 miles away in Indiana County PA. I always wondered how Nelson
and Rachel got together. This may be the linkage.
[1376]
I am attaching a list of what I know or suspect about my Wright family. I
will definitely keep my eyes open for information about your family.
