near Lebanon, KY; received a D.D. degree with high honors from Urban College
in Rome, Italy; and was ordained a priest 13 August 1834.

professor of philosophy in the seminary at St. Joseph's College. He attained
national recognition as editor of the {\em Catholic Advocate}. In 1837 he was
appointed pastor of St. Peter's in Lexington, KY, and was consecrated as a
Bishop 10 September 1848, and assumed charge of the diocese of Kentucky two
years later. Under his administration the number of churches in the diocese
doubled, orphanages were established, the Trappist monks settled at Gethsemane
and the Xaveieran brothers entered the diocese.
