Subject: The Fair Abigail!
Yes, indeed, George Dement had a sister named Abigail. I don't have the exact
references or names handy, but... It seems the fair Abigail (as we call her)
became pregnant out of wedlock. According to the court records, the father,
who deemed not to marry said Abigail after being confronted with the
pregnancy, was fined severely for both ruining her honor and for support.
George Dement was given custody of the child to raise. Well, as it turns out
a few years later, another young lad became the father of a second child out
of wedlock, and again refused marriage. This, however, was too much for the
Provincial judges. They fined the young fellow, but also condemned the Fair
Abigail to a public punishment of ten lashes! We don't know whether she went
to term, and if so, who the guardian became. These records were found by
accident while searching unindexed court proceedings from Maryland Provincial
records. Occasionally you find a gem!
