"Notes inherited from Grandmother, Mabel Smith Staub: ...His youth was
spent near his birthplace...In June of 1743, he bought land in the
Shenandoah Valley, at the time a part of the Va. Frontier. This country
was very wild in the 1740's for it wa snot until 1756 that the legilature
caused a fort to be erected at Winchester, which was not established
until 1752, for the protection of the settlers against the French and the
Indians. He settled on Long Marsh, a stream located three miles from
Berryville--originally, Battletown--the county seat of Clarke
Co.==which was originally Frederick Co. He lived in a story and a half log
cabin to which he added rooms as the family expanded. He raised horses
extensively, keeping always near the figure of 100 on hand. The land wa
surveyed by George Washington in 1761.
He entered upon vast tracts of acreage in Va. and Ky.--Western Co. under
depositions of Squire Boone the brother of Daniel Boone. The Boone and
LaRue families had been neighbors in Bucks co., Pa. Most of the Va. land
claims are in the area now comprised by W. Va. The total extent of his
land holdings is not known, but some fifty thousand acres is noted. Under
a proclamation of Gov. Dinwiddie, he and George Washington were
grantees of certain tracts sof land which were surveyed by Washington.
Other members of his family were brothers: Abraham; Jacob; and sister
Elizabeth Pierceson; and Anna Suber or Subin. It is intersting to note that
ABraham Lincoln's family at this generation, or rather that of the
father's thereof, was also a neighbor of the Boones in Bucks co., Pa.
There were five intermarriages between the two families, Boone and
Lincoln during this proximity. He died in 175."

Hunterdon Co., NJ. About age 30 he moved with his wife to Frederick Co.,
Va. in 1743. She was daughter of Rev. James Carman, a Baptist minister.
Settled on Long Marsh, a stream about 3 miles from Battletown (Now
