[498] !BIOGRAPHY: Manchester Men, Events and Reflections, by V.B. Walters.
Captain Joseph Paul
This soldier's name is not usually found in any published list of Manchester
township's contribution to the Civil War. Very probably he was a son of the
pioneer Jacob Paul who settled in section 7 of the township around 1835 but of
this the writer has not been definitely assured. The Jacob Paul settlement
was made north of Windy Hill cemetery. Captaln Paul married and lived near
Seeleyville. He was the father of two children, a girl named Lizzie and a son.
After Captain Paul had enlisted as a private in the service he came back and
was at a school house above Wood Grove or Seeleyville and gave an address.
There v!as a band (according to an old time letter writer) and a Mr. Wharton
played a fife. Captain Paul died in the South. His body was never brought
back for Internment. His widow afterward married James Harper, the
Reinersville merchant. Later when Mrs Lucinda Paul-Harper died, her daughter
Lizzie Aiken had the body interred at Rehoboth cenietaey one-half mile, north
of Reinersville and a mock-grave was besides that of her mother in honor of
her father, Captiin Paul.
Mock Grave
The mock-grave made for Capt. Paul in the Rehobeth cemetery is the only
Instance ot tne kind found anywhere among the cemeteries of Manchester
towntship. Upon the cenotaph erected of this false grave is the following
inscription "To the memory of Captain Joseph Paul, company 12 Regiment, O. V.
I. In the 35th year of his age. who fell In the attack on Ft. Wagner, Morris
Island. S. C.. on the night of the 15th of July, 1863." Lucinda his wife
was born April 11, 1832 and died January 8, 1872.
