[1401] Written to Victoria Paul, November 1, 1994
[1402]
I tracked down your great grandparents in New Hampshire in the 1920
Census. This was your mother's father's parents. Your
grandfather was named James Mulroney, and was a union official in
the restaurant worker's union in the 40's and 50's in New York.
He married Marion Gasior who was born in 1920 sometime around
1941. I don't know if he served in WW II. They were divorced in
the early 50's (?). He was, apparently, a serious alcoholic.
Your mother never saw him again, except once when she caught
sight of him through the door of a saloon.
[1403]
I heard from your Mom that he was related to some Canadian
Mulroney's ancestors of the former prime minister of Canadian.
[1404]
Anyway, here is what I found in the 1920 census. It has some
holes (as you will see). Actually, it was not the actual census
but rather the Census index. There is a lot more information in
the census itself, such as profession, number of years at school,
etc. Might be worth looking at.

[1406]
James MULRONEY, white male, age 35 (1885), born Canada, emigrated
1905, naturalized 1910.
[1407]
Mary, wife, white female, age 33, born Canada, naturalized
citizen
[1408] Everette, son, age 9 born NH
[1409] Irnold, son, age 7, born NH
[1410] Jerry, son, age 5 born NH
[1411] Elyrvyn, son, age 4, born NH
[1412] Mary, daughter, age 2, born NH
[1413] Margaret, daughter, age 1 month, born NH
[1414]
Your grandfather, I presumed, was about the age of your
grandmother (b. 1920) but he is not yet in this family and since
there is a new born girl (June 1920), the earliest your
grandfather could have been born was late 1921. So he must have
been younger than his wife. I presume that this is the correct
family. So maybe one of the earlier children is middle name
"James" and went by that name. Maybe Elyrvyn is really your
great grandfather. With a name like that, I'd prefer James.
Only your grandmother knows. Will she tell? Will anyone ask?
[1415]
There is one other Mulroney family in New Hampshire: a Roy R.
Mulroney, in Cheshire County, age 27 with a wife and two small
children. But he was born in Mass. And there is no young James
in that family anyway.
