Dear Mr. Paul,
I am sorry to take so long to answer you but circumstances prevented
me until now.I don't have Edmund Abell on a gencom file as I am not sure he
is a relative but will give you what info I do have as follows; Edmund Abell
- b.1812 Hardin, Ky. m.1st.Elizabeth Swan on 8-14-1832 in Hardin,Ky. m.2nd.
on 1-20-1849 Mrs Mary Mills, widow of Richard Mills, in New
Orleans,La.License no.1070, married by Alexander Derbes 4th.Justice of the
Peace.Edmund Abell was a lawyer in the 1850 census as follows;8-21-1850
5th.wd. 1st muinicipality,N.O.La.-pg. 202:1066/1563- Edmond Abel 39-lawyer
born Ky.: Mary Abel 38-born N.Y.{marr. within yr.}Mary Jane Abel-16 born
Ark.; Francis Abel-10 born Ark.; Bridget Shlengesby-22 born Ireland. I am
assuming that Mary Jane and Francis are Edmund's children but they could be
his stepchildren.I was excited when I first found this census record as my
Wolgamott ancestors were also in Ark. and Ky. before coming to N.O.As I said
Edmund was a lawyer in 1850 but later became a Judge and in fact was a Judge
during an 1866 race riot in N.O. in which my gr.gr. grandfather Thomas
Walgamot died.Thomas was a N.O. policeman as well as a confederate veteran
and he died as well as 1 other policeman from sunstroke and heat
exhaustion. The reason I told you about Thomas is that later Congress
investigated this riot and determined that the police had started the riot
and as a result of Congress's investigation, they passed the Reconstruction
Acts in the spring of 1867, and assigned General Philip H. Sheridan to head
the 5th. military district comprised of La. and Texas.Sheridan promptly
removed Mayor Monroe,Judge Edmund Abell, and the state attorney general for
their part in the massacre.I need to research more about when Edmund Abell
became a Judge.Edmund Abell died 8-9-1884 of cancer of the face at 157
Dorgenois St. in N.O.La. and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Violet 667,
title to the grave held by J.C. Wendahl. The doctor was A. E.Dupas.I also
have to research more about the grave.Well,I hope this helps you and your
cousin in your research, will send more when I get it.Patricia Lott
