!BIOGRAPHY: Samuel Dye moved to Lawrence township with his brother John in
1805, from Virginia. He and his wife Susanna Hoff, had 10 children: John H.,
Hannah (wife of Joseph Caywood), Sophia (wife of Amos Dye), Betsey (wife of
Ezekial Dye), Mary (wife of Ezekial Reed), Ann (wife of William Templeton and
William McGee), Johnathan, James H., Nancy (wife of John Hill) and George.
Hannah and Sophia married cousins of their father; Betsy and Mary their second
cousins. Samuel Dye was a man of eccentric appearance. In cold weather, a
long cloak, covered with shorter capes, the number depending on the
temperature, protected his tall and corpulent body. He was always in a good
humor. He served as magistrate in Lawrence township for 31 years.
